I think the snake was lonely - and that's why it wasn't eating. Reptiles (in my opinion) are as capable of emotion as mammals - just in a different way. Every living creature needs other living creatures for emotional support.
Maybe it was a friend from another lifetime. Maybe the rodent has a virus that would kill the snake and it can sense it. i'd say the snake got confused by always having dead food.
